Brooke sending God's Own Stone

On Thursday, March 29th, 2012, Brooke Raboutou sent God’s Own Stone, 5.14a, at The Red River Gorge in Kentucky. Brooke is visiting the Red over Spring Break with her family and other team members and coaches of Team ABC Boulder. This is her first 5.14.

Brooke’s ascent is extremely impressive and places her in the record books as the youngest American and youngest woman in the world to send 14a. She was also nearly the youngest person in the world to send the grade, but she will now share that honor with her friend Tito Traversa of Italy, also age 10, who sent his longstanding 14a project on the exact same day as Brooke’s ascent.

According to Coach Robyn, Brooke’s ascent took 5 tries. On her first day, Wednesday, it was quite hot and Brooke went up the route to figure out all the moves and then gave two redpoint burns. On Thursday she tried the route cold, fell, came down, rested, and then sent next go.

Brooke has previously sent 13d, with Swingline at The Red during last year’s spring break, as well as 13c and a few 13b’s.

Announcing Two New Facilities!

Sneak Peek of the new ABC Kids Climbing Boulder Facility

We’ve been hard at work for the past several weeks building two new ABC Kids Climbing Facilities. These new facilities are the result of years of planning and are specially designed for skill development, camps, birthday parties, groups, special needs experiences, and training of our elite Team ABC climbing teams.

One facility is located right here in Boulder, Colorado, and is nearly next door to our friends at The Spot Bouldering Gym. Coach Didier Raboutou designed the walls and is heading up the construction, and many local climbers and friends are helping with all the work including Coach Mike Auldridge. Shawn even helped pound t-nuts the other day:

Now most of the plywood is on the main boulder at the Boulder facility, but there is still much work to be done with the other boulders, top rope wall, and 3-7 year old skills development area.

The second new ABC Kids Climbing facility will be in association with Momentum Climbing Gym in Salt Lake City, Utah. More info on that to follow, estimated opening is June 2011.

Big Thanks

ABC would like to extend major thank-you’s to a few individuals who have helped us turn our new facilities into reality.

Thanks to General Contractor Tim Harrington and his company Harrington Stanko Construction.

Megan Mascarenas is the JIBS 12-14 Girls Champion!

Megan at Mount Evans last summer

We are very proud of Team ABC Boulder member Megan Mascarenas for winning her 3rd straight Junior Indoor Bouldering Series Championship. Megan won the girl’s 12-14 category. Nice job Megan!

A short rundown:

Megan reports that the problems in the redpoint qualifer round were very good and she had a lot of fun climbing on them and hanging out with all the other climbers at the event.

After qualifiers Megan had the highest score for the girls in any age group and also had a higher score than most of the boys. The competition was strong and included several US Junior Team members like Kayla Lu, Carrie Scott, Zoe Steinberg (last year’s US Junior ABS National Champion), and Tiegan Wilson.

Finals were onsight style and held division by division (11 and under, 12-14, and 15-18 girls and boys). Megan flashed all 4 of her problems and won the comp. Nick Picarella (Boys 15-18) and Eli Frankel (Boys 11 and under) were the only other competitors to flash all their finals.

Megan went home with a new Marmot tent, $150, climbing shoes and lots of other schwag. She says she had a great time and met many nice people.
