Today is day 2 of 2012 ABS Youth Nationals. We’ve finally found the placements for our team members and also their start times for those who made semifinals. If you are available today to come down to Colorado Springs and support our team please do. Nice job everyone!
Format
Climber – quali place – quali scores – semis climbing time (if applicable)
Scoring
Scoring is based on flashes, then tops with attempts to top, then attempts to highpoint.
Scoring on the official results sheet is expressed as total tops, total points, flashes, total attempts to top, and total attempts to high points, so for Laurel it would say: 3, 56, 3, 3, 7. The first 3 is # of problems she topped, the 3rd 3 is # of flashes, and the 4th 3 is attempts to top. The 56 is the combined total value of all the problems that she topped + her high point of the 6th hold on problem 4. Problem 1 was worth 19 pts, Problem 2 was worth 16, Problem 3 was worth 15. In Laurel’s category nobody topped problem 4 but she got a highpoint of hold #6. Therefore 19 + 16 + 15 + 6 = 56 pts. The 7 is total attempts to highpoints/tops – 3 problems 1st try = 3 + hold 6 4th try = 3 + 4 = 7 total attempts to highpoints. Further attempts on the problem after the highpoint has been reached are not counted, so you do not lose position by continuing to try and best your highpoint in your allotted climbing time.
For simplicity’s sake I am expressing the scores here as in the example below:
Example – Laurel Todd
Laurel flashed 3 of her boulders and got to a highpoint of the 6th hold on quali 4 on her 4th attempt. Therefore Laurel’s score is 3 flashes + 6 points, 7 attempts.
It is possible for a climber to have more points than another climber and still qualify behind them because if the second climber has fewer points but more tops they are still ahead.
Hope this clears things up instead of making them more confusing. : )
